Thesis

Master's thesis (30 ECTS): Choose your topic and supervisor based on your interests – just ask your favorite professor!

Requirements & admission process

Are you interested in our master's program in Economics? To be eligible, you should have good grades and a solid foundation in economics and its methods from your bachelor's degree. To enter our admissions process, you need a bachelor's degree from a university (or an equivalent degree), totaling at least 180 ECTS. Typically, applicants should have a degree in economics, though exceptions can be made for graduates from political science, social science, or mathematical and natural science fields with a solid background in economics. Additionally, you must demonstrate proficiency in German (C1) and English (B2).

?

Admissions Process

The admissions process consists of up to two stages, with most decisions made at the first stage.

?

The admissions committee evaluates the performance in the bachelor's program on a scale from 0 to 100 points. The following two evaluation criteria are used:

  1. Final grade:?Applicants can be awarded up to 50 points based on their final grade. The scoring starts at 0 points for a grade of 3.5, with 2 points awarded for each 0.1 additional increment, reaching the maximum of 50 points for a grade of 1.0.
  2. Subject qualification:?This criterion evaluates the applicant's prior knowledge in areas relevant to the course of study. Applicants can be awarded a maximum of 50 points. The evaluation focuses on two subject groups:
    • Subject Group 1: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Finance, Economic Policy, Decision Theory, Game Theory, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics
    • Subject Group 2: Fundamentals of Business and Economics, particularly Economics, Mathematical-analytical Methods, and Social Science Methods
You may apply once fewer than 40 credit points remain for the completion of your bachelor's degree. If the degree is not yet completed, a certificate must be submitted showing completed modules, individual grades, and the average overall grade. Credits not yet earned are provisionally assigned a grade of 4.0 for evaluation purposes. If the bachelor's degree has already been completed, a copy of the degree certificate and the final transcript of records must be submitted.
?
Admissions Criteria Based on the First Stage
An applicant's first stage score is the sum of the scores from criteria 1 and 2:
  • Applicants with 60 or more overall points, and at least 25 points for the subject qualification (criterion 2), will be admitted to the programme.
  • Applicants scoring less than 50 overall points will not be admitted.
  • Applicants with 50 to 59 overall points, or more than 60 overall points but less than 25 for the subject qualification, will be invited to the second stage.

For the vast majority of applicants, an admission decision is made during the first stage of the evaluation process. The second stage is typically reserved for cases where it remains uncertain whether the applicant’s background in economics is sufficient to succeed in our master’s program.

?

Applicants who score at least 50 but less than 60 points overall, or less than 25 points for subject qualification in the first stage, will be invited to an interview (second stage). The interview is conducted online, lasts between 20 and 30 minutes and is conducted individually.

?

The purpose of the interview is to engage in a constructive and friendly conversation about the applicant’s prior academic background and knowledge of economics. The aim is to assess whether the applicant can pursue the goals of the Economics and Public Policy master’s program independently and responsibly. Subject-specific expertise covered within the program itself is not the focus; rather, the interview evaluates the applicant’s overall suitability for the program.

?

The interview is conducted by two members of the economics department, including at least one professor. Each member scores the interview on a scale from 0 to 50, and the final score of the second stage is the sum of both evaluations.

?

An applicant will be admitted if

  1. at the first stage at least 60 points have been achieved, with at least 25 points in criterion 2, or
  2. at least 50 points were achieved at both stages of the admissions process respectively.
